The short answer

Meta Business Agent is the AI agent Meta placed inside WhatsApp so a business can serve any customer at any hour. It answers questions about the business, recommends products from the catalog, books appointments, qualifies leads and closes sales in the chat, and lets a person take the conversation whenever needed.

Meta opened it to eligible markets on June 3, 2026, after nearly two years of testing in markets including India and Mexico, and introduced it alongside the Meta Business Agent Platform at its Conversations event in London.

What it actually does

The capabilities are not vague: Meta lists them one by one, and each leans on something already connected to your business account.

Which channels it covers

The agent started on WhatsApp and spread from there. The API platform, on the other hand, is WhatsApp-only today.

The two routes to get it

There is a self-serve route and an integration route. They are not mutually exclusive and they solve different problems.

What it does not do

This is where most projects get surprised. The limits come from the platform and the policy, not from configuration.

It is not a general-purpose assistant: since January 2026 policy requires task-specific agents
It does not reply freely at any time: free-form replies are confined to the service window the customer opens
It cannot query your systems unless you declare connectors: without them it knows nothing about orders, stock or availability
It is not enabled for finance, health, government, alcohol, gambling, over-the-counter drugs or matrimony services
It does not coexist with another messaging product on the same number
It does not deliver messages if the account has no active payment method

Who should use it

The agent performs when there is a volume of repeated questions and a system to query. The narrower the task, the better it works.

No. Meta AI is the assistant for people. Meta Business Agent is the agent that serves customers on behalf of a business, using that business's knowledge and catalog, and able to hand the conversation to someone on the team.

Meta does not expose the model as a configurable parameter: the agent runs on Meta's AI infrastructure and the model cost is bundled into the token rate. What you do control is the knowledge, the instructions and the tools it may use.

Not for basic activation. To build on the Business Agent Platform you need a Meta app with the messaging permissions, a system user and access to the WhatsApp Business Account: that is what a technology partner brings.

Yes, if you implement it with the platform. There are endpoints to send test messages and to evaluate the agent's performance, and the audience can be limited to an allowlist of numbers before opening it up.

Meta announced connections to hundreds of systems, naming Shopify, Zendesk and Shopee among them. Beyond that, any API of your own can be declared as a connector with its tools, which is what lets the agent read real orders or availability.

Activation was free at first. Since August 1, 2026 agent conversations are billed by tokens at USD 2.00 per million, which works out to roughly USD 0.04 to 0.05 per delivered message.
